God said He Is Going to Have Mercy upon Whom He Would Have Mercy, But There Are Still Conditions to Be Met

God’s mercy is paramount when it comes to success of man. When God’s mercy is taken away from man, such a man will continue to toil in vain.

God’ mercy is man’s mercy and man’s mercy is God’s mercy. This is because when God is about to show mercy/kindness or have favour/compassion on man, He uses some kind of vessels – angels or man most times. Hear what King David said to Ziba here: “And the king said, Is there not yet any of the house of Saul, that I may show the kindness of God unto him? And Ziba said unto the king, Jonathan has yet a son, which is lame on his feet.” – 2 Samuel 9:3. The kindness of God is always through man!

Though God said to Moses, “I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion.” – Romans 9:15. But there are still conditions to receive God’s mercy through men.

Here are three (3) of them:
1. Loving God and keeping His commandments. God shows His mercy to only those who love Him and shows this by keeping his commandments. In Exodus 20:6, God said,  “And showing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments.” If you receive God’s mercy, and you think you don’t deserve it, it may be that someone related to you has paid the price. Like the case of Mephibosheth, his father Jonathan, David’s friend before he became king, had paid the price. He was no more alive, and the reward had to be received. Hence, it was transferred to his only living son, Mephibosheth. In your own case, Jesus had paid the price, what you need to get the reward is just to accept that all he did on the cross is just because of you, and you are qualified for God’s blessings through His mercy. Moreover, all God’s commandment has been summarized to be: Love God and your fellow human beings. If you can do this, though not easy, you are the number one candidate for God’s blessings via His mercy.

2. Walking before God with all one’s heart: There would have been no need to talk of this number-2 condition to qualify for God’s mercy, if we truly love God and our fellow human beings like ourselves. However, many people are not God’s lover, they are only men’s pleasers and feigning they love God. Only God knows those that actually love Him, and He knows this by searching their hearts. Normally, man’s heart is desperately wicked, except it is transformed. Factually, no man on earth recognises a man with a transformed heart except God. That is the reason why He says, before you can be qualified for His blessings through His mercy, you must walk before Him with all your heart.

“And said, O LORD God of Israel, there is no God like you in the heaven, nor in the earth; which keeps covenant, and shows mercy unto your servants, that walk before you with all their hearts” – 2 Chronicles.

3. Referencing God: Fear of God does not mean being afraid, but referencing Him. Why is the reason for fear of God to be qualified for His mercy? Generally, we all know, God is a merciful God. Sometimes, He doles out His mercy to those who do not qualify for it, and no one can question Him. However, there is a superb level of mercy that is available to those who fear Him, those that reference Him always. In Psalms 103:11, the Psalmist says, ”For as the heaven is high above the earth, so great is his mercy toward them that fear him.”  Can you now see the level of mercy that is available to those that fear Him?

The mercy that is available to those that DO NOT fear Him can be likened to the crumbs that fell to the floor from the main meal which are meant for the dogs. The main meal – the-high-above-the-earth mercy – is meant for the lovers of God that fear Him, and extends it to men and do it genuinely with their whole hearts.
