The wedding ceremony was very great and flamboyant. The trumpeters and the band were performing wonderfully and acrobatically. It was a real dancing competition. Different styles of rhythmical sounds were being displayed. When it comes to trumpets, there were different types; trombones, there were different types, and different types of band sets. While the dancers match up to the challenge, it was a joyous moment for the couple, come and see people dressed in a stylish manners. The colour really blends. The couple chose lilac and purple, the bride’s family picked a different colour from the groom’s. It was a real competition but not a negative one.

“That is the type of competition that I like”, said the groom, “the one that spurs the best out of you.” He continues, we have to do this, it is once in a life time, you can’t do your wedding twice, and we would spend any amount of money that it deserves. There are three important celebrations in a man’s lifetime: The naming ceremony, the burial ceremony, and the third one is what we are doing today. We were not there when we were christened, we would not be there when we die, and the burial ceremony is being held. The only one we are opportune to organize and experience by ourselves is the wedding ceremony. Please, let’s have a deserving one.

It was after marriage. As I was playing with my wife in a romantic mood, a flash back of my childhood day came to me, and I saw myself playing with my immediate sister, I was barely four years old, I don’t even know how I remember such a long time event, not to talk of how small I was then. It was still a mystery to me till today that a four-year old after about forty years can still remember what happened to him – I mean some of what had happened to him, not everything. Everywhere was silent. It was as if our parents were not at home. My one and only sibling then was a girl of about two years old, we were both playing with sand, and we were using it to mould a bird house, it is not a real bird house, but that was what it was been called then.

We were fond of ourselves as love birds, and we were always together when our parents were not around. I remember our house then was not far from the road, and we have been trained not to go to the main road to go and play. Along that road was a hospital in which I was given birth to, it was later I got to know this from records. I also discovered later that my immediate and only sibling then was also put to bed in that same hospital.

It was when I grew up I got to know the reason why my parents told us not to go near the road, it was a very busy road, it led to a major rotary intersection that led to a university, a polytechnic, and a popular teaching hospital in the city. In fact, a child of my age then, couldn’t go to such road and come back alive, it is like a dog that went into a lion’s den, it is sure that such dog will be bathed with blood. In the opposite direction, it led to three markets that were being patronized every day, this is one of the major reasons why the road is that busy.

When my parents was not at home, and I was playing together with my sister, we always felt their absence, our house is a story building, to climb up was not always a challenge to me, but to my sister, it is a great obstacle, and of course, her burden is mine, the whole scenario was always like being in a lonely world. We couldn’t go to the road, and we couldn’t climb up, the only option left was to continue to make our bird houses, we had become experts in building and construction. What we just needed was to register our company, and became partners in progress. I can never believe that you can be two, and still be experiencing loneliness!

I can never forget the experience that made the case worse, that made me really feel as if I was the only one in the whole world. At that tender age, I was taken to one of my grand-mothers, to go and live with her. I don’t know the reason why my parents took such decision. Should I call it wickedness? How can parents take their first child to go and live permanently with another person, a stranger? I can never recollect ever meeting her. This was so callous on the part of my parents especially my mother, they did not even consider my age. If they did not consider my age, couldn’t they consider my younger sister that would always need me if they were not around.

This decision of my parents, even till today still baffles me. It was a psychological torture! Can I ever forgive them?

An Instrument That Made Great Men

Fri May 24 , 2019
Many great authors have written many great books but not about “books” hitherto. How can people read books when they don’t know what books are? Even the few that do, read just for pleasure. They think “books” are just black ink – or whatever colour – on white or brown paper. It is so sympathetic to hear this.
