The Purposeful Youth

This is a message Holy Spirit gave to me for a youth programme held about a fortnight ago. May you be blessed as you read it!

THE PURPOSEFUL YOUTH
The purposeful youth is a youth that consciously live life with a purpose. If the purpose of anything is not known, abuse is inevitable. The reason why many youths commit suicide or indulge in various vices is because they don’t know their purpose for living. A purposeful youth is determined to succeed in life, he/she spells out why the need to succeed and how he/she is going to excel in life.
A purposeful youth catches the vision earlier, and engages an early run with it (Habakkuk 2:2). You’re not too young to start. Let no man despise your youth (1 Timothy 4:12). King Saul wanted to despise David’s youth; he said, “You are not able to go against this Philistine to fight with him: for you are but a youth, and he a man of war from his youth.” (1 Samuel 17:33).
“Has somebody said you can’t be a millionaire just because nobody is a millionaire in your family?” It’s a lie! “Has somebody said you can’t go to university because nobody has been there in your family?” It’s a blatant lie!
Every challenge always has a solution tied to it. David reasoned in response to King Saul’s saying to him – If Goliath can be a man of war from his youth, I too can!
If Bill Gate could start from 11, wrote a programme and built a business around it by 19, I too can!
If John Dell of the Dell Corporation became President of his own company by 19, I too can!
If Kenneth Edwards Hagin started at 18, I too can!
If Bishop David Olaniyi Oyedepo of Living Faith Church Worldwide could start at his twenties, I too can!
If Oral Roberts could start at 19, I too can!
If Billy Graham could start his ministry at 20, I too can!
If Norman Vincent Pearle could get ordained at 18, I too can! No wonder, “The Power of Positive Thinking” sold 20 million copies.
Jesus had already started at 12. Joseph got his dream at the age of 17. Michael Faraday started as a Laboratory attendant, as a teenager, and he became a celebrated scientist. Benjamin Franklin started developing himself as a teenager, spending his food money on books, until he became a legend.

Here are some pin-pointed characteristics of a purposeful youth.

CHARACTERISTICS OF A PURPOSEFUL YOUTH
1. A purposeful youth makes sure he/she is doing something worthwhile at every point in time (1 Samuel 17:34).
2. A purposeful youth makes sure he/she succeeds in whatever he/she lays his/her hands to do (1 Samuel 17:34b – 35). Whatever your hands find to do, do it with the whole of your might. Your success now would always motivate you for a greater success!
3. A purposeful youth depends on God for success, not on his efforts only (1 Samuel 17: 37 – 38).
4. A purposeful youth sticks to God (1 Samuel 17:39). David refused to go to war with King Saul’s armour because he had not proved them before, but he had proved God, and therefore, he sticked to God.
5. A purposeful youth learns to take a sure risk with God. David had risked his life to prove the potency of God’s power. Youthful age is the period to make as many mistakes as you can. It can be deadly at any other time, and the repercussion may be very fatal.
6. A purposeful youth refuses to be intimidated (1 Samuel 17:42). “And when the Philistine looked about, and saw David, he disdained him: for he was but a youth, and ruddy, and of a fair countenance.” He is confident in God and in himself to start anything and face any challenge.
7. A purposeful youth runs with the vision until he/she succeeds (1 Samuel 17:48).
8. A purposeful youth champions a godly course (! Samuel 17:51 – 52).
9. A purposeful youth would flee youthful lusts (2 Timothy 2:22). David was a young man that always flees youthful lust! Do you know what helped him? He was always gainfully engaged. “A lazy hand is always a devil’s workshop.” That was why he made a mistake of adultery later in the future; when he was supposed to be at war as his youthful days, he relaxed.
May you be a purposeful youth, and succeeds in all areas of your life in Jesus’ name!
