She Is Nubile, But…

What do I hear you say?

I hear you well.

Repeat yourself, I say.

A native of………..?

Why do you keep mum?

Leave me alone mom!

There is no need for a dash

This time around

Enough is enough.

Enough I say.

Am I not nubile?

I’m due for it.

A lady of 3 decades and 3 years!

Even if I’m 21/2 decades,

You don’t need to do all such.

I came along with a Hausa man

You said no

With an Ibo man

You said it’s not done

Now with a Yoruba man

We can’t go with them

You say

This is not the third time

But the last

This is the end of it all

Don’t even talk about him again

Can’t you reason with me?

I’m reasoning with you,

To go and face the wrath?

The wrath of the elders!

I know and I’m quite sure

That we all came from the same unit

From the first man and woman

I even remember,

In the beginning

If not marrying each other

From the same unit

We would not have been here today

Notwithstanding, he who plays the piper

Dictates the tunes

But two eyes shall go for it

That is the penalty

A harsh penalty

A cruel one

Choosing between death and life

What will I do now?

In a dilemma I am

The death is inevitable

I am the oldest young woman of my family

The inscrutable God, help!
